What the FDA Announced
In 2025, the FDA announced a phased plan to remove several petroleum-derived synthetic dyes from the United States food supply by 2026. The dyes targeted include Red No. 3 (erythrosine), Red No. 40 (Allura Red), Yellow No. 5 (tartrazine), Yellow No. 6, Blue No. 1, Blue No. 2, Green No. 3, and Orange B — nearly the full roster of FD&C synthetic colorants that have been permitted in food for decades.
This represents a significant shift in U.S. food policy. The European Union has required warning labels on foods containing six of these dyes (the "Southampton Six") since 2010, and many European food manufacturers reformulated their products after the labeling requirement. The U.S. has historically maintained that these dyes are safe at approved levels, making the FDA's 2026 action a departure from that position.
Why These Dyes Have Been Controversial
The primary concern driving the regulatory action is the association between synthetic food dyes and behavioral changes in children — specifically hyperactivity and attention problems.
The most influential study on this topic is the "Southampton study" published in The Lancet in 2007. Researchers administered a mixture of six synthetic dyes (including Allura Red and tartrazine) plus sodium benzoate (a preservative) to children ages 3 and 8-9. Children who received the dye mixture showed significantly higher levels of hyperactivity as rated by teachers and parents, compared to children who received a placebo.
The effect was statistically significant and reproducible, but not large, and it affected a minority of children. Critically, it involved a mixture of dyes and a preservative, making it difficult to attribute effects to any specific compound. Follow-up research has been mixed, with some studies finding effects and others not replicating them.
Beyond behavioral effects, some dyes have raised other concerns:
- Red No. 3 was found to cause thyroid cancer in male rats at high doses. The FDA banned its use in cosmetics in 1990 but left it in food for 35 years before the 2025 action — a regulatory inconsistency that drew sustained criticism.
- Red No. 40 and Yellow No. 6 have been associated with hypersensitivity reactions in a subset of susceptible individuals, particularly those with aspirin sensitivity.

What the Transition Looks Like
Manufacturers have been given a timeline to reformulate products. The pace varies by dye and product category. Foods that will be most affected include:

- Breakfast cereals with colored pieces

- Caramel color: For browns (though some forms of caramel color carry their own scrutiny)
The challenge for manufacturers is that natural colorants are often less stable (fading with heat, light, or pH changes), more expensive, and can impart their own flavors at higher concentrations. Some products may simply look different after reformulation.
What This Means for Consumers Now
If you are shopping today, reading ingredient labels remains the most reliable way to identify synthetic dyes. They are listed by their common names (Red 40, Yellow 5, etc.) or FD&C designations. Products reformulating ahead of the deadline may already note "no artificial colors" on packaging.
For families concerned about children and food dyes, the most dye-dense categories are predictable: brightly colored packaged snacks, breakfast cereals aimed at children, and artificially colored beverages. Whole foods contain none.
The scientific evidence for harm from synthetic food dyes at typical consumption levels is not definitive — the effect sizes in research are modest and often require mixtures with other additives. However, the precautionary logic is sound: if natural alternatives can achieve similar color results, there is little reason to maintain petroleum-derived dyes in the food supply, particularly for foods consumed primarily by children.
The Broader Pattern
The dye ban fits into a broader regulatory trend toward reconsidering food additives that were approved under older, less rigorous standards. The FDA has also recently reviewed and restricted brominated vegetable oil, potassium bromate, and propylparaben under similar logic.
